In my 5 years of studying chemistry along with science and then eventually selecting chemistry as my optional subject in grade 9 I have been fascinated yet don’t understand this marvel of nature ‘CHEMISTRY’ the name itself scares me and many more but embark with me on this journey to know and understand what is this subject about and how does it play a crucial role in our lives.
Basis of Chemistry:
To understand chemistry we must grasp some core concepts:
- Atoms: Fundamental of chemistry and base of all matter as everything we study in science revolves around this. Atoms are really nano sized mostly independent piece of an element which are identical throughout the element.
- Chemical Reactions: chemical reaction occurs when atoms rearrange by breaking and forming new bonds, transforming reactants into entirely different products. Unlike physical changes, reactions create substances with new properties. Common signs include color shifts, temperature changes, or gas production. This process follows the Law of Conservation of Mass, meaning no atoms are created or destroyed—only their partnerships change e.g Respiration.
1.States of Matter:
Matter exists in different forms and the states change based on heating or cooling
- Solids: Atoms are tightly packed and only vibrate in place. They have a fixed shape (like an ice cube).
- Liquids: Atoms have enough energy to slide past each other. They take the shape of their container (like water in a glass).
- Gases: Atoms are flying around wildly with lots of space between them. They expand to fill any space available (like steam).
- Plasma: The “extra” state. At super high temperatures (like in the Sun or lightning), atoms get so excited they lose their electrons, creating a glowing, charged gas.
The Building Blocks: Elements Mixtures and Compounds
Everything you see your phone, the air, your own skin is made of tiny particles called atoms
- Element : When you have a bunch of the same type of atoms, you have an element (like Oxygen, Gold, or Iron).
- Compound : A chemical compound is a pure substance formed when atoms of two or more different elements bond together in a fixed, definite proportion.
- Mixtures : A mixture is what you get when you combine two or more substances physically, but not chemically in any proportion. Think of it like a salad: you can throw lettuce, tomatoes, and croutons together in a bowl, but they don’t turn into a new “salad molecule.” They just hang out together, and you could technically pick them apart if you had enough patience.

3.Social Life of Atoms: Bonding
Atoms are rarely alone because in order to make themselves stable they ‘hang out’ with other atoms and make bonds:
- Ionic bonding: This bond takes place between a metal and a non-metal. The metal gives out electron(s) to the non-metal. Think of it like me stealing a piece from a chocolate bar of Mustafa (lead designer)
- Covalent bonding: This type of bond happens between two non-metals where both of the elements mutually share pair(s) of electrons. Think of it like two friends sharing earbuds .
4.Chemical Reactions:
A reaction happens when you break those bonds and rearrange the atoms into something new.
- Reactants: What are the initial ingredients or what you start with e.g (Baking soda + Vinegar)
- Products: What you end up with after the reaction has took place e.g (Carbon dioxide bubbles + Water)
Thank you for reading I will post further content related to other topics of chemistry until then view our other posts
5.Periodic Table:
The periodic table organizes all 118 known chemical elements by increasing atomic number. Elements are arranged in horizontal rows called periods and vertical columns called groups. Elements in the same group share similar chemical properties, allowing scientists to predict how they will react and bond with one another.
